Daruma Project
Dámó / Daruma (達摩) Illustration. This is an illustration that I created exploring Japanese culture. The Daruma Doll is modeled after Bodhidharma, a semi-legendary Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th or 6th century. He is known as Dámó in China and as Daruma in Japan. It was fun, since all I knew was that Daruma is an evil doll (influenced by a movie), but it turned out that the Daruma doll is actually a good luck talisman, making it a popular gift of encouragement.
